Not just for the Mac.

Since 2007, Lithium has been the network monitoring app for the Mac. Now we’re stepping out with new deployment options for Lithium Core including a linux-based Virtual Machine Appliance that can be deployed on Windows, Linux or Mac and an iOS client for iPad and iPhone.

Device Monitoring

Monitor CPU, Memory and Disk usage, Network Interface status and throughput and environmental devices using the industry-standard SNMP support built in to Lithium. Got a custom monitoring requirement? No problem, use Module Builder to create a custom Lithium Module using the vendors SNMP MIB files.

Be sure your Xsan, Xserve and Mac OS X hosts are operational and performing at their peak with Lithium’s unique support for the proprietary monitoring protocols needed to get in-depth monitoring data from Apple products.

Application Monitoring

Be confident that your applications and services are running at all times using the Service and Process monitoring feature in Lithium. Lithium will continually check that critical processes are present and required ports are responding.

Email and Push Notifications

Out-of-the box support for Email Alerts and iOS Push Notifications to ensure you receive immediate notification of problems.

Device Monitoring

Lithium is a suite of network, server and storage monitoring applications with comprehensive Windows, Mac OS X and Linux Server, Network and Storage device monitoring using the industry-standard SNMP monitoring protocol.

Lithium has built-in support for monitoring virtually any network device that support SNMP. Standard Network Interface, CPU, RAM and Disk SNMP MIB support is included along with vendor-specific support for Cisco, Qlogic, Brocade, Active Storage, Promise and more.

In-depth support is provided for Apple’s Xserve (Intel and G5), Mac Mini, Mac OS X Server and Xsan products. Lithium supports the proprietary Apple-specific monitoring protocols required to deliver an unparalleled level of monitoring in-sight for Mac OS X Server and Xserves. Xsnmp is supported out of the box to provide reliable, SNMP-based monitoring of Mac OS X Server and Xsan deployments.

Application Monitoring

Monitor the performance and operation of applications and services with Lithium’s extensible, script-based Service Monitoring feature. Scripts for monitoring common services including HTTP, SMTP and IMAP are included. Custom Service Monitoring scripts can be written in any scripting language using a simple XML interface to communicate service status to Lithium.

Alerts and Notifications

When an Incident is raised, Lithium can execute an Action Script to fire off built-in Email Alerts or to perform detailed custom altering, escalation and even automated corrective action. Action Scripts can be written in any language supported by the host platform including Perl, Shell script, Python, Ruby, etc.

Lithium ships with Action Scripts to send an Email Alert and/or an iOS Push Notification in the event of an Incident or fault condition occurring. You can customise the content and distribution of the email to suit your needs.

Architecture

Lithium is built on a distributed client/server architecture where the actual monitoring, data collection, recording and reporting is done by Lithium Core. The client applications, Console and Lithium for iOS connect to Lithium Core using an XML/HTTP protocol. A single instance of Lithium Console or Lithium for iOS is able to connect to multiple installations of Lithium Core at once and display montoring data from all the installations through the one client application. This provides immense flexibility for deploying Lithium in large enterprise and service provide environments with multiple locations and/or end customers whilst retaining simplicity for small to medium sized customers.

Compatibility

Lithium Core can be deployed as a Virtual Machine appliance on Windows, Linux and VMware virtualization platforms or natively on Mac OS X (client or server). There is a native client available for Mac OS X and iOS, and a no-plugin Web Interface for all other desktop and mobile platforms. Read more about Compatibility.

Deployment

A Lithium deployment consists of one or more installs of Lithium Core. Core does all the polling, data collection, analysis, reporting and recording of monitoring data. It communicates with the monitored devices using SNMP or other monitoring protocols and it executes the Service Monitoring scripts to check the operation of port and protocols. Core also hosts the Lithium Web interface and the XML/HTTP interface accessed by the native Lithium clients.

Customization

Now with Lithium 5.0 you can import third-party SNMP MIBs into Lithium using our new Module Builder application to create custom Device Modules to use with Lithium. Building new Device Modules is as simple as loading the SNMP MIBs from the vendor, scanning the device and deciding what data values you want Lithium to monitor.

You can script custom tasks for Lithium to perform when an Incident (fault condition) is detected using Perl, Ruby, Python, Shell or any scripting language that can be executed on the Lithium Core host. Likewise, custom Service Monitoring scripts can be written to perform detailed and application-specific checks to see if a service is responding and operating correctly. A simple XML request and response format is used between Lithium Core and the Action or Service Monitoring scripts to communicate service status.
